Back in the day.....

In 1953 two successful builders, William Johns and Christopher Lyng, decided to pool their talents and expertise founding a building company. They named the company, Johns and Lyng Pty. Ltd. Both men had been acquainted for a number of years. William Johns had recently retired as Managing Director of Clements Langford and Henry Lyng had spent his whole working life in the building industry.

The two founders had articulate views on the type of company they planned to develop. Their aim was to expand the company on the basis of quality performance - which in turn rested upon a strongly adhered to philosophy; that Johns and Lyng would make it a cardinal aim to provide a highly personalised and professional service.

This outlook has provided the framework for expanding the business, usually in the form of referrals from a wide range of architects. The use of architects was considered fundamental to the company's way of doing business. Building and architecture were respected as two separate disciplines, the company believed, collaborating in defined areas to provide the most creative and economical result.

The progress of the company was marked by a large number of commercial projects, many of them repeat contracts for some of Australia's best known industries and institutions. The company regularly carried out work for Carlton United Brewery, Ansett Transport Industries, The Bank of New South Wales, as well as factories, warehouses, schools, hotels and motels and other varied projects.

Sophisticated management has always played an important part in the company's day-to-day operations. This was recognised as the only way in which to service all contracts proficiently and to complete them on schedule. To this end Johns and Lyng defined a system of management embracing key departments such as contracts, supervision, estimation, sub-contracting and on-site construction. The planning and co-ordination of those departments was the responsibility of the Managing Director and the General Manager. It was their function to relate all contracts to a daily critical path analysis and to maintain close liason with all departments.

This enabled Johns and Lyng to retain its spirit of personalised and professional service, which clearly contributed to the company's growth and reputation in those early years.
